A basaltic shield volcano hosting one of Earths few persistent lava lakes, rising from the Danakil Depression — the lowest and hottest inhabited place on the planet at 125m below sea level. The gentle contour lines of its broad shield belie the violence at its summit: a churning lake of molten rock that has burned continuously for over a century.
