Mount Fitz Roy
El Chaltén, Argentina
The spire that broke Patagonia open to the world — Fitz Roys 3,405m granite tower erupts from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field in near-vertical walls that generate their own weather. The Tehuelche called it Chaltén, the smoking mountain, for the perpetual cloud cap whipped by 100mph winds across its summit needle. One of the most technically demanding climbs on Earth.
