The legendary Mountains of the Moon — a non-volcanic massif straddling the equator that rises to 5,109m at Margherita Peak, the third-highest point in Africa. Permanent glaciers cling to equatorial summits above bizarre giant heather and groundsel forests found nowhere else on Earth. Ptolemy marked these mountains as the source of the Nile two thousand years ago.
