A chain of eight volcanic peaks straddling the East African Rift where mountain gorillas shelter in bamboo forests above 3,000m. Karisimbi at 4,507m is the highest, its contour lines tracing the perfect cones of some of Africas youngest and most active volcanoes — Nyiragongo last erupted in 2021, its lava lake one of the largest on Earth.
